Although Iron Man 2 was a bit of a disappointment, this summer has actually been pretty good for movies. Over the weekend I had the chance to see Despicable Me.
It was great to see a villian as the hero for a change. The situations were funny, the animation top notch, and the characters were memorable. Steve Carell was hilarious as usual; he’s yet to make a movie I haven’t liked.
Highly recommended, go see it!
I may add though, the Minions remind me of the Rabbids from the game Rayman: Raving Rabbids. I wonder if this is where they got they’re inspiration from. See videos below for a comparison.

Great film. Amazing cinematography. Jaden Smith kicked butt. Jackie Chan cried. And there were great quotes like this one:
“Being still and doing nothing are two very different things.”
Oh and is it better than the original? Yep. Yeah I said it. Go see it!

Being a film school graduate, I guess it’s correct to say I have a passion for films. Well, good films at least.
Sometimes it’s hard for me to find inspiration in still images. I can browse through a dozen magazines and browse a dozen more websites and still not find something that inspires a fresh concept in my mind.
So, as a last resort, I turn to films to give me that much needed creative spark. I don’t know what it is about going to the movies that still manages to be exciting. Maybe it’s the smell of the overpriced popcorn?
For me, going to the movies still manages to have it’s same attractiveness as it did when I first saw The Lion King as a kid. However, you don’t have to go “to the movies” to get inspired. You can just watch a great film in the comfort of your home.
Regardless of the outlet you choose pick a film that has great composition (Atonement), lighting (Sin City), music (Fantasia 2000), or story (Elling). If Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator inspires you, pick that. As long as the film makes you eager to create something new, it’s a great resource to fall back on when you’re in a creative funk.
If you have a favorite film that inspires you, feel free to share it.

Recently my friend called and was in a bit of a panic because she accepted a wedding job that she was starting to regret.
She had a “hard to deal with” client and was making only a few bucks for all her hard work. While currently in a hole, I advised her that in the future she needs to set standards and stick to them.
Make a short (or long) list defining what your business does and doesn’t do. You don’t work after 8PM? Put it on the list. You don’t work without 50% of your fee upfront? Put it on the list.
When you’re done, review your list and try your best to adhere to it. Standards give your business direction and help maintain order. Who wants to be stuck working for less than your worth, on an assignment you hate?
Here’s a quote regarding the importance of standards:
Without standards, you end up accepting any morsel of paying work that comes your way, like a hungry mouse devours a crumb. You remain stuck in that gut-tightening, demoralizing position of doing work you despise, for clients you don’t like, just because you need the money.

Hope this helps.
