COMMENTS: TERRY RICHARDSON

Recently model Rie Rasmussen called out photographer Terry Richardson and got the ball rolling on the “Terry Richardson is a perve” campaign. Here’s what she had to say:

“He takes girls who are young, manipulates them to take their clothes off and takes pictures of them they will be ashamed of. They are too afraid to say no because their agency booked them on the job and are too young to stand up for themselves.”

“His ‘look’ is girls who appear underage, abused, look like heroin addicts . . . I don’t understand how anyone works with him.”

“I told him what you do is completely degrading to women. I hope you know you only [bleep] girls because you have a camera, lots of fashion contacts and get your pictures in Vogue.”

“Instead of arguing with me, Terry ran out of the bar. Then the next day, he called my agency and complained I called him names in front of clients in Paris. It was the most cowardly thing I have ever seen.”

Wow.

Personally I’m not a big fan of Terry’s work, but I admire some of his accomplishments. His stark visual style is very popular amongst photographers, which I think is pretty cool.

Regarding his scandal, I don’t have a strict moral code when it comes to nudity and sexual content. However, if anything he’s doing is criminal, it should be taken seriously and frowned upon(like the underage girl part). Until he’s proven to be the monster they’re making him out to be, I say leave him alone.

Innocent until proven guilty.

THOUGHTS: MY TOP 5

Someone asked me an interesting question the other day.

The question was: “If you had the opportunity to photograph any 5 women in the world, who would it be?”

THOUGHTS: THE 25th YEAR

Tomorrow, I turn 25 years old. I’ve never placed much emphasis on my birthday, but I guess I should consider this one special.

I’m a quarter of a century!

In honor of this accomplishment, I want to share some of my goals for this year. They are:

- Hold an event showcasing my work
- Travel to 2 foreign countries to shoot
- Attend Fashion Week
- Shoot one video project at least every 2 months
- Push myself to develop the most creative, unique, and beautiful shoot concepts
- Get an agent

Nothing too fancy, but those are a good start.

Remember: “The discipline to write something down is the first step to making it happen.”

Here’s to another 25 years, let them be more exciting and interesting than the last.

BTS: A ROUGH LANDING IN NEW YORK

Day 9

After a terrible experience with rainy weather, broken umbrellas, and learning that people don’t like to greet with smiles, opting for a frown or vicious glare, I’m starting to like New York.

My neighborhood is nice and full of beautiful, interesting people. There are shops and restaurants EVERYWHERE. SoHo, FTW!

On another note, I’ve learned more about directions during the past few days than I have in my entire life. I’ve gotten lost on the subway system, oh I’d say, 8 times. But now, I can officially announce, I Jamiya Wilson, can navigate New York City’s labyrinth of a subway system.

End journal.

I’m just getting my things shipped in from Los Angeles, so this is my first blog as a New Yorker. Stay tuned for my next shoot, which is scheduled for April 3rd. I hope to take my work up a notch with a fresh new concept.

Expect to see more updates in a few days. The blog will be back at 100% by the end of next week.

BTS: IN TRANSIT

If you’ve noticed, it’s been a few days since my last blog post. The reason is because I’m currently moving to New York City!

This year it’s so long L.A., hello NYC. I had a great time in L.A., but desperately wanted to be in a different market. It was either try to break into shooting celebrities in L.A. or moving to a market where I could shoot beauty photography full-time. I chose the latter.

Granted, I’m leaving behind friends and industry contacts, but I want to look at this as a fresh start; something to be excited about. A time to create new work and reinvent myself artistically. I’ve been absorbed in all sorts of media lately and it’s given me a new perspective for my approach to photography.

I touchdown March 10th and should be ready to shoot by the 15th. This year will be an incredible journey, wish me luck!
