THOUGHTS: GONE FOR THE HOLIDAYS

muppet_christmas_carolMerry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

No updates until the new year!

I plan to start posting more BTS articles and update at least 1-3 times a week.

Also, my photography style is going through some changes. Expect crazier work in 2010!

Now I’m gonna take a break and watch The Muppet Christmas Carol.

THOUGHTS: PHOTO WORKSHOPS

Photo Workshop
Oh man, the photo workshop. $1000 to learn the tricks of the trade from a “pro”.

I’ve attended a few in the past. Some good, some bad.

Price doesn’t equal quality. The cheaper ones were often better than the wallet-buster ones.

As with all things money related, it’s best to shop around before you pay anything.

Perhaps you can learn the same thing, for FREE, through Google.

Most of the techniques I use were learned from hours of searching the web.

If you must attend a workshop, make sure it’s designed to give you an actual skill by the end.

A useful skill like retouching, lighting white backgrounds, or proper digital capture will help you a lot.

THOUGHTS: HOLIDAY “SPECIALS”

Christmas WreathIt’s that time of year again and retailers are pulling out all the stops to entice you with “specials”.

$25 REBATE, Save $100, NO INTEREST, 0% FINANCING

After you see what you could have saved by ordering online:

100% BUYER’S REMORSE

Most of the deals available at local stores are easily beat by online retailers (Screw YOU Samy’s Camera!).

Plus there’s usually no sales tax, promo codes you can use, and free shipping!

If you’re doing any holiday shopping, think about online alternatives to save some money!

THOUGHTS: GETTING WHAT YOU’RE WORTH

GettingToYesIt’s a rainy afternoon. You just received a phone call from a client.

It has been days since the phone rang, months even.

They ask, “How much for this, this, and this?”

You respond, “Well…uh…I usually charge $$$$$.”

They say, “What? That’s too expensive! How about $$?”

You look over at the stack of bills. You respond, “Sure, no prob.”

Don’t do this. Get what you’re worth or at least close to it. NEGOTIATE!

Most importantly, don’t be afraid to say no. No sense in taking a job without profit.

If you need help, I recommend the book Getting To Yes by Roger Fisher and William Ury.

THOUGHTS: EXPRESSION

Chanel_AdIf you want to get better as an artist, you have to be your worst critic.

Yesterday I was looking through my portfolio and, while I liked what I saw, something was missing.

EXPRESSION!

Defined as: the conveying of feeling in a work of art.

Expect to see more expression in my future projects. Bigger, better, and more dramatic!

How do you convey feeling in your work?
