One of my favorite feelings as a photographer is being on set, entrenched in the process of creating an image. Whether it be trying to figure out lighting, or watching my team work together to fix a problem, there’s something magical about the moment. Often I see other photographers who try to capture this “magic” by shooting behind-the-scenes videos. Some are good some are bad.

The example below is a GOOD one:

As you can see in the video, the emphasis is solely on Kiera Knightley and the amazing things happening around her. The photographer, while an important element, remains a background element (appearing briefly before focus returns to the star of the show) and I like it this way.

For me, I’m no longer amazed at the lights or what type of camera I’m using. What holds my attention the most is the person I’m working with more than anyone else on the set. The model. It’s my job to make sure she’s happy and taken care of. In reality she is the star, so if I were to shoot a BTS, she’d be the main focus.

Remember, many people consider being a photographer a glamorous profession filled with non-stop excitement. It’s not about you as a photographer, it’s about the “feeling” of being a photographer. The mood on the set, the location you’re shooting at, your crew hard at work and most importantly the model. Convey these elements well and people will find your videos compelling enough to come back for more or even tell a friend.

Simply put:

Make it entertaining. Make is simple. Make it short. Make it GOOD!
