VIDEO: LILY’S

While browsing Youtube for inspiration today, I came across a really great video featuring my favorite fashion model, Lily Donaldson (I really hope I get the chance to work with her!).

The video is shot by photographer Nick Knight, of SHOWstudio.com fame. I love the mixture of dark elements, such as the broken glass, blended with elements of beauty, such as Lily and the flowers. It reminds me of old French B&W films from the golden age of cinema. Even a little Alfred Hitchcock comes to mind in this haunting, yet beautiful video.

BTS: HELENE TRAASAVIK SHOOT

20090620_HeleneTraasavik0165Last Saturday I had the pleasure of working with a phenomenal model, Helene Traasavik. I’d been wanting to work with her in the past, but could never seem to get the shoot scheduled.

Like many shoots timing, budgets, and random things always get in the way. But FINALLY, we were able to get the show on the road, scheduling a beauty shoot.

At first, I had this wild concept that featured cosmetic tools such as a makeup brush or eyeliner pencil, but after discussing it with everyone and shooting some test shots, I decided against it.

After seeing the first shot, I knew my decision was the right one. KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid

INSPIRATION: MARKUS KLINKO & INDRANI

MKIWhen I first became a photographer, the first questions I asked myself were, “Am I good enough?” and “How far can I push myself?”. Simply put, I wanted to know what my limits were.

What better way to know what’s possible than by researching photographers who have achieved things many can only dream of? Things that I dream of.

So I fired up my browser, perusing the internet, until eventually stumbling upon the work of Markus Klinko & Indrani.

VIDEO: COCO MADEMOISELLE

One of my favorite feelings as a photographer is being on set, entrenched in the process of creating an image. Whether it be trying to figure out lighting, or watching my team work together to fix a problem, there’s something magical about the moment. Often I see other photographers who try to capture this “magic” by shooting behind-the-scenes videos. Some are good some are bad.

INSPIRATION: UP!

up-pixar
Last weekend I had the pleasure of seeing UP! One word: HILARIOUS! Unlike many movies this year, I was actually excited to see this one! Seeing a new Pixar movie is always a treat and this movie was no different. I don’t want to ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, but I will say the boy scout and dog are some of the funniest and most memorable characters I’ve seen in recent times.

Also, I’d like to point out something I notice in many of Pixar’s films: SIMPLICITY. Take a simple story and tell it well. This is why stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears have lasted for years. At their core, they’re really simple stories that can be followed by almost anyone. This same approach can be used for music, photography, art, and….lol….life!

KISS = Keep It Simple Stupid

What I also learned from this movie is to dream BIG! It’s never too late and you’re never too old to pursue your dreams!

If you feel you’re too cool for this movie, get over yourself and go see it! Highly recommended!
